Decoding a German payslip without panic
Your first Gehaltsabrechnung looks like a spreadsheet argued with a novel. Start with four anchors.
Anchor one: Brutto
Confirm the gross amount matches your contract for the period, including any agreed allowances. Proration in the first or last month is common and worth checking against start dates.
Anchor two: Steuerklasse and tax lines
Steuerklasse affects wage tax withholding. If you recently married, moved, or registered a child, expect a lag before the slip reflects the change. Ask payroll which date their system received from the tax authority.
Anchor three: Social contributions
Health, pension, unemployment, and long-term care contributions appear as separate lines. Employer portions are not your net mystery—they sit beside employee shares. Compare percentages month to month rather than memorizing every code on day one.
Anchor four: Net and bank transfer
Net pay should reconcile with the transfer you receive. If a VWL or canteen deduction appears, trace it to an enrollment you remember approving.
When to escalate
Missing overtime compensation that your contract treats as paid, or a recurring unexplained deduction, deserves a polite written question. Bring the slip and the contract clause—not a screenshot from a forum thread.
